Hello, Michigan homeowners! Living here in Metro Detroit, we’re all too familiar with the sudden temperature drops and heavy snowfalls. Ice dams can form quickly, potentially causing significant damage to our gutters and roofs. With over five years of experience in the gutter business, I’ve gathered some insights and tips on how to prevent these icy blockades and what to do if they’ve already formed.

What Are Gutter Ice Dams?

Ice dams occur when snow melts on a warm roof, then refreezes at the roof’s edge, where it’s colder. This ice build-up blocks the path of melting snow, which then seeps under roof shingles, damaging roofs, walls, and ceilings.

Prevention is Key: The best way to deal with ice dams is to prevent them from forming in the first place. Here are a few strategies we recommend at J&A Exterior:

  1. Proper Insulation and Ventilation: Ensure your attic is well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising to the roof. Adequate ventilation helps keep the roof temperature even, reducing the chances of ice dam formation.
  2. Roof Raking: After a heavy snowfall, use a roof rake to remove the snow from the edges of your roof. Keeping about 3-4 feet of the edge snow-free can significantly reduce the risk of ice dams.
  3. Heated Gutter Guards: Installing heated gutter guards can be a game-changer. These devices prevent ice from forming in the gutters and downspouts, ensuring a clear pathway for melted snow.

Dealing with Existing Gutter Ice Dams!

Addressing Ice dams safely:

  1. Calcium Chloride Ice Melter: Use calcium chloride (not rock salt) to melt the ice. You can fill a nylon stocking with calcium chloride and place it vertically across the ice dam to melt through and create a channel for water to escape.
  2. Professional Ice Dam Removal: Sometimes, the safest and most effective way to handle severe ice dams is to call in professionals like us at J&A Exterior. We use steamers to gently melt the ice without damaging your gutters or shingles.

Remember, while it might be tempting to chip away at ice dams with a hammer or chisel, this can severely damage your roof and gutters. Always prioritize safety and the integrity of your home.

As we continue to navigate our frosty Michigan winters, keep these tips in mind to protect your home from the damages of Gutter Ice dams. If you’re unsure about the condition of your roof or gutters, or need help with ice dam prevention or removal, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at J&A Exterior.
